Problem Statement

Grease Trap Waste (GTW) is a high lipid waste stream from the waste water management system that is underutilized despite its potential for conversion into valuable biodiesel. Unlike the leading sources of biodiesel – soybean oil, corn oil, and used cooling oil – GTW is treated as a liability, making it one of the few liquid hydrocarbons remaining without value. However, GTW is dirty, inhomogeneous, and contains degraded, acidic lipids. Processing GTW to biodiesel requires additional separation and purification steps but has potential to be an economic and environmentally benign drop in fuel.
